About this deal

Cedar chips are a very natural-looking type of mulch that blend in well with landscape beds in Happy Valley. It gives off a scent, which is considered pleasant by most people, but some people are sensitive to smells, and it can cause them to have an allergic reaction. The Spruce Pets uses only high-quality sources, including peer-reviewed studies, to support the facts within our articles. The mulch itself can be natural or dyed; this is for aesthetic purposes; while the natural color is reddish brown, it is often died black, yellow, dark brown or red, which adds to the decorative value of flower beds and gardens when you use it.

Using mulch on these soils or problem areas would prevent water from evaporating, causing an excess of moisture around the base of your plants and potentially leading to root rot and the plant’s demise. Cedar mulch lasts long: especially compared with other organic mulches (like straw, for example, but also other bark mulches, like pine mulch), cedar mulch does not deteriorate fast.

Plus, white cedar is supposed to be resistant to the artillery fungus which sometimes invades other mulches. This happens with all woody plants and can deplete the soil nitrogen levels so that the nutrients aren’t available to feed the plant and help with its growth. Our shavings and sawdust come from planer shavings and table saw dust, with no sanding dust or floor trash. Spread an even layer, generally around 3 inches thick, of cedar mulch to the top layer of your soil.

Cedar mulch can be used with well established plants; there is a degree of safety on this that, at this moment in time, can be trusted. Turning off the personalised advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive.

This is why we need to talk about its properties, its effects, its uses and also, of course, its drawbacks. Mulch is most commonly made from bark or wood chippings, but it can also be made of grass clippings or pine needles, among other things. So far I have not noticed anything amiss with the plants (most of them already established when the logs were placed there, others recently planted). Derived from trees such as western red cedar ( Thuja plicata), eastern red cedar ( Juniperus virginiana), and white cedar ( Thuja occidentalis), cedar mulch is available either in chips or shreds.

Mulch can act as a pest control method; not all mulch is equal at this, and cedar mulch is actually the best. Dear hubby thought that planting in a kids wading pool was a neat idea until we had problems with sickly plants. There are some situations where cedar mulch is not the best option, and these should be considered and applied to your own circumstances before you make your decision about using cedar mulch. Although that reduces stress for mature perennials, avoid applying cedar to areas which need to heat up quickly for the sowing of seeds in spring. But Linda Chalker-Scott, an extension horticulturist at Washington state University, reports: “there is virtually no documented evidence for allelopathic activity in either Thuja or Cedrus spp.
