About this deal

A quirky classic, this book details her creation of a landmark cottage garden, as well as her battles with her husband in the process, who preferred the standard suburban approach. Eventually, a bit sweaty, a bit breathless, not very Thor-like, I’d made a hole big enough to peek through. But I didn't but it for that, I bought it because it's a beautiful, beautiful book and because I wanted inspiration for my allotment. We knocked out the bricked-up window and dug out clay to a further depth of twelve inches, passing it out through the window to a waiting skip. It is written in a lovely informal style discussing her successes and failures as she created her garden.

My favorite moment is Margery's description of how she ignored Walter's beloved (and garish) dahlias after his death. Fish negotiate the terrain of their garden, by turns separately and together, often with humorous collisions. The hornbeam came as whips, the yew as large pot-bound trees – bought cheaply second hand – and neither took long to establish and provide some privacy against the nosey folk. When I went back to work full time and then with my mother's illness, the garden was mostly neglected. It’s one of a (not very) regular series of posts about gardens and houses we’ve owned over the years. I do dream of finding extra rooms in the various houses I lived in – have read that it’s not uncommon, but no idea what it means. Sometimes in the summer my heart softens when I see its really pretty flat pink rosettes, but most of the time it is war.

When Margery's voice emerges on its own, questioning or ignoring Walter's pronouncements, the book is at its most endearing. If, by an oversight, it is allowed to stay on a piece of a flower bed for more than a minute, in two minutes that flower bed will be a solid mat of stonecrop of a particularly luxuriant quality. Very enjoyable read of an English couple creating a garden in a forsaken plot of land, in 1940s England. This might have been first published in the fifties but the fact its still available is testimony to how good it is.Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. Dust Jackets are not guaranteed and when still present, they will have various degrees of tear and damage. My grandmother's purple primroses are long gone and I cannot seem to get replacements to settle, but there is always salal, a native bush much-loved by florists for its leathery leaves, and loved by my family for the berries I use like blueberries in muffins. We Made a Garden is the story of how Margery Fish, the leading gardener of the 1960s, and her husband Walter transformed an acre of wilderness into a stunning cottage garden, still open to the public at East Lambrook Manor, Somerset, England.
