About this deal

There’s nothing like a classic houndstooth pattern! Whether you like bold, bright contrasts or subtle, muted blending this stitch pattern can fit your style. The Houndstooth stitch pattern is not new. We’ve been using this pattern design in countless garments, bags, scarves, blankets, and accessories, and it never disappoints! Vests are perfect for turning weather. It’s just enough sweater to keep you warn while leaving your arm free. Houndstooth is a great stitch pattern that resembles the jacquard stitch pattern, but with several advantages.

First, it is ridiculously easy to learn how to crochet houndstooth. It’s a 1 row repeat. One row to learn and that row is only single and double crochet stitches. Even a beginner can master this stitch pattern. If you're a crop top kind of girl, then go for a cropped sweater vest. If you wear biker shorts every day, pair them with an oversized sweater vest. There are so many different styling options to fit each and every aesthetic. Of course, we can't just skip over the classic sweater vest and pleated skirt pairing, but there are some fashionable outfit ideas that you may not have thought of, like a sweater vest and a graphic t-shirt or a sweater vest with a pair of high-waisted shorts. Next, unlike the knit stitch pattern the crochet version lies flat. This makes it ideal to use for blankets or scarves. The pattern itself was a wonderful experience. It’s so easy to understand, and the stitch pattern is one of my favorites for a reason. It’s a timeless look that is surprisingly easy to replicate in crochet! The designer did a great job, the vest is a beautiful creation, and I can’t wait to wear it every day all fall and winter. I’ll enjoy the many conversations of people saying something like “that’s a cute sweater vest” followed by me responding “thanks, I MADE this!” Probably with a little twirl.I hope you love this pattern, and that you enjoy making it. Please share a photo with me by tagging @HeartHookHome across all social media and show it off in the Heart Hook Home Crochet Community on Facebook! I sort of became addicted to this project and finished it in only a few days. As in, I started it on a Thursday afternoon and had it sewn together and finished on Saturday night. If I had to be honest with myself and add up the hours spent, I would say this took me right around 10-12 hours. Again, this is for the XS size and I also left out one step. It probably “should” have taken me more like 14. Measurements: I used Swish DK to make the modeled version, which is an absolutely love yarn. It is 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool which means that it will not felt and it will not shrink. After washing this crocheted Houndstooth vest it softened beautifully and will be a new staple in my wardrobe. Houndstooth Vest Sizing:( XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) fits bust up to ( 30”, 34”, 38”, 42”, 46”, 50”, 54”, 58”, 62”) This sweater vest could be made using one solid color if you’re not into the Houndstooth stitch design. Or use one color for the vest body and one for the edging. How chic would that be?!

I loved my choice of yarn in this project, it worked beautifully! The designer used a yarn called Patons Canadiana, which I’ve never tried but it looks very similar. The two are fairly close in comparison as well, with 3.5 oz getting you 185 yards in the Lion Brand version and 205 yards in the Patons. Not exactly identical but close enough that you wouldn’t need to alter much at all to make a substitute! I did not change the pattern, and my fit ended up just fine. I was inspired to make a video for this stitch pattern after seeing some comments on my How to Crochet video series about Harry Styles’ patchwork cardigan. Yes, it is very easy to crochet! Believe it or not, the Houndstooth is made of simple stitches, the double crochet and the single crochet. Because of these basic stitches used, this vest pattern would be the perfect thing for beginner crocheters. The easiest way to remember is to always put the single crochets in the double crochet stitches and vice versa. There is even a full video tutorial for this stitch right here on Heart Hook Home. There’s something about a Houndstooth Vest that really sets off an outfit. Now we have a NEW Houndstooth Vest crochet pattern that is sure to be the perfect addition to your wardrobe. The designer does not give a gauge for this pattern. If you’d like to compare to my project for your own use, I’ll put that here. Just remember that this is not the official pattern gauge and is probably slightly off from the original designer’s gauge, with my dimensions being a little larger than theirs!
