About this deal

In 1952, in an early example of cross promotion, Petula Clark's single "Anytime Is Tea Time Now" was used to advertise Tetley on Radio Luxembourg. Tetley was the first company to sell tea in tea-bags in the United Kingdom in 1953. [6] In 1989, following extensive consumer tests establishing Britons' preferences, Tetley launched the round tea bag. [7] As India reduced import duties on tea, Tata Consumer Products offset its reduced share of the domestic market by gains in Europe and North America. In April 2014, Columbia Law School and The Guardian reported that some of Tetley's tea is harvested by workers who do not receive the minimum wage in India. [11] [12] The business grew slowly at first. Joshua kept his malting business and only sold his products to innkeepers and private individuals who brewed their own beer.

It claimed the beer market faced the "perfect storm of falling consumption, increasing costs and rising tax". Joshua died in 1859, leaving the business to his son Francis William, who took on a partner, Charles Ryder. He also used the railways to help him transport Tetley’s beers. This meant that their products could be distributed to other parts of the country. Although various campaigns criticised the closure, announced in 2008, they have had no impact on the decision. The table below contains all postcodes on a two day service. Please note all deliveries to Northern Ireland are also on a 3-5 days service.

Although it’s no longer brewed in Leeds, in 2013 a Tetley gallery was opened. Tetley’s also retained the sponsorship of many sports teams, venues, and events. The business was successful enough for William to buy two acres of land. This made him one of the biggest landowners in Armley. Francis originally wanted to choose his own son Charles Francis Tetley. However, he was only ten years old at this time. Pattinson, Ron (23 September 2018). "Tetley's beers in 1848 – 1849". barclayperkins.blogspot.com . Retrieved 23 September 2018. The final barrel of Tetley’s brewing in Leeds was on the 24th of May 2011. The city decided to keep its distribution centre based nearby in Tingley. Where is Tetley’s Beer Now?

At the age of 29, Joshua married Hannah Carbutt who was the daughter of a Leeds cloth merchant. They decided to settle on Albion Street in Leeds. The following three properties were acquired from Leonard Hartley, brewer of Garforth, in July 1937: At the time of Elizabeth’s death, her son Joshua Tetley was only ten years old.
