About this deal

Traditional lime can be grouped into two broad categories; air lime (non-hydraulic limes, those that set when exposed to air) and water lime (hydraulic limes, those that rely moisture/water to aid setting). Historic England publishes an extensive range of expert advice and guidance to help you care for and protect historic places.

The stippling action is important; brushing up, down or side-to-side would not have the desired effect. Despite their smaller size, limes usually contain more juice and are also a little zestier in taste than lemons. Due to their high juice content, limes are also more often used for making juice and syrup than lemons. In terms of nutrients, the two fruits have roughly the same amount of vitamin C, while lemons contain roughly twice as much potassium. In comparison to lemons, most lime varieties are much more sensitive to cold and have a shorter shelf life. Starting late on a morning (10am) and finishing early afternoon (3pm) is a general best practice working through winter months. An initial hydraulic set drives early strength and can introduce some frost resistance in non-hydraulic and hot-mixed lime mortars. Although limequats have the genes of the cold-tolerant kumquat, they can only tolerate short-term frost in temperatures no lower than between -3 to -5 °C. So, it is best to overwinter your limequat tree in a bright, cool place with temperatures between 1 and 12 °C. The brighter the place, the higher the temperature may be for the winter hibernation.Lime mortar was developed by ancient Egyptians and used extensively in building the Roman Empire, it is steeped in rich history. A good balance of strength and flexibility, available in a range of strengths to suit different applications. Both limes and lemons descend from the citron ( Citrus medica) and one other parent each, so they are effectively half-siblings. The Persian lime, in turn, was created by crossing the key lime with a lemon. As a result, it is more similar to a lemon than a key lime. The easiest way to distinguish between these two citrus fruits is by their colour. In contrast to lemons, ripe lime fruits are green. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, limes can also have a yellow tinge, but they only ever turn completely yellow once overripe. In terms of shape, lemons are usually oval and have a protruding “nose”, whereas limes are round. Lime mortar that is applied to cover internal walls and ceilings is generally called "lime plaster".

It should go without saying, if a conservation officer is involved with the works - seek guidance and follow their advice. The carbon footprint of lime products are much lower than cement which is responsible for up to 10% of global CO² emissions. The material is available as a wet, pre-mixed mortar with a shelf life that is practically indefinite if stored correctly.

Product rank:

Citrus x floridana‘Eustis’: A cross between a lime and the round shape of the kumquat. This variety is the most widespread. The fruits are comparatively full of seeds. Pursha or Romana lime ( Citrus limetta x Citrus sinensis): Also known as sweet lemon as it is not quite as acidic as other lime species. It carbonates very slowly but this leaves it vulnerable to frost damage in cold conditions, it is not suited to damp conditions where it may not carbonate at all. Today, heavy duty equipment is highly recommended, various forced action mixers are used depending on the volume you're mixing:

It all started in Los Angeles in 2002 with a denim revolution. True Religion tore apart traditional manufacturing methods with visionary new techniques. The Super T stitch, with its five-needle thread and two-stitch-per inch process, was born. Believing rules were made to be broken, the pioneers built on denim's romantic tradition while inventing daring new treatments, washes and fits. A fighting spirit and rebellious attitude have remained at the heart of the brand's ethos ever since. Key lime or Mexican lime ( Citrus x aurantiifolia): The Latin name Citrus x aurantiifolia means ” golden leaf citrus”; the fruit is slightly smaller and contains many seeds; this lime tree is strongly branched and not quite as large as the Persian lime. BS 8104:1992 is a code of practice to estimate exposure to wind-driven rain throughout the United Kingdom. The idea is to add just enough water to make the mortar workable, the masonry itself can be dampened to reduce the absorption of the moisture if you’re working with porous masonry.

Limes are harvested in late summer and sometimes not until winter. Yet in their natural habitat, limes can be harvested all year round. Limes are ready to harvest once the fruit has softened and the skin has lightened a little in colour. Only in the tropics, where temperatures remain constant, does the lime peel stay green when it is fully ripe. Here, it turns light green to yellow due to the cool temperatures at night. Preserving and storing limes The hessian sheeting (or other breathable membrane) is sprayed regularly with water, this simple procedure increases humidity and controls moisture loss.
